Elbow Dysplasia
The Elbow dysplasia is a painful
hereditary or caused health problem of the first legs. Which sometimes
is unseen but sometimes cause limping and will have serious problems in
moving. There are a number of theories as to the exact cause of the
disease that include defects in cartilage growth, trauma, genetics,
exercise, diet and so on. It is likely that a combination of these
factors leads to a mismatch of growth. Some veterinarian and breeder say
it is more painful for a dog than a hip dysplasia.

Symptoms and signs of elbow problems
Most commonly the large breed dogs are very affected, but Landseers rarely have serious problems with it. If the dog has problems it is seen as early as 4 to 10 month old which starts always with lameness, limping. Diagnosis of this can be made from 4 month old.
Cause same at hip dysplasia. Can be also genetic, developmental and nutritional. But mostly bad nutrition and care cause it. The dog or puppy often use stairs, slipping on tile and floor. Jumping from high place down.

Genetic
As at the hips, genetic also play role in elbow dysplasia problems. Usually close relative populations of dogs. Breeders always need to make as clear and close relation mating as possible to keep up heterogeneity. Breeds like Landseer which is not really wide known breed the problem is also bad. There are only few bloodlines which repeat the combination causing with this very same bloodlines all over Europe. In genetic heredity the risk factor can be dominant and recessive also. With dominant inheritance the problems and signs will come out before breeding age so from 4 to 12 month old. With recessive inheritance the will only carry the gene but not cause any genetic problem in dogs. Unfortunately the dysplasia is polygenetic, that means which do not know which combination of genes cause it. Only one thing we know is that two totally healthy dogs can make dysplastic puppies but it is very rare.
Nutrition and Environment
The main cause of hip and elbow problems are usually more often made process and very few is due to heredity. Elbow problems can be influenced by environmental factors. From several studies made we can say that nutrition has a major impact on skeletal development. The main reason is the food with high calcium content can lead to problems. From Hip to Elbow problems, leg deformations and Osteochondritis dissecans. Also lack of vitamin D in body will cause problem with calcium absorption. Phosphorus has no as big effect as calcium or vitamin D. In case of not good calcium ratio in body the first leg bones the radius and the ulna will grow in different speed. If the first paws start to deform we can be sure that there is problem with the body vitamin and mineral balance. The high quality puppy foods for large breed puppies need to have around 1% of calcium content and controlled vitamin D content. However people say that high protein will cause skeletal problems it is not true. High protein does not have influence on skeleton but on the body fat content. Too much protein can cause obesity which will lead to skeletal problems.

Summary
Elbow dysplasia can be genetic if there is used 2 dog which carry the gene or from a dog which is affected but it will not necessarily go to the puppies. Environmental factors play bigger role in getting elbow problems, from nutrition to care. First signs of elbow problems can be seen from 4 month with limping.
